Accomplishments

  • Provided leadership, staffing and underwriting for the 7th Annual LGBTQ Tobacco Control Summit held in June 2009, in conjunction with the National Conference on Tobacco or Health, in Phoenix, AZ. The summit was attended by approximately 140 participants from 34 states and the District of Columbia.
  • In collaboration with the "Leave No Funds Behind" project, the Network produced a needs assessment of LGBT organizations and state Departments of Health (DOH) regarding funding for LGBT tobacco programs and provided TA to those interested in applying for disparity funding.
  • Created two "Sharing Our Lessons" series guides, which highlights success stories and best practices within LGBT tobacco control.
  • Produced and disseminated the national edition of our “LGBTQ Communities: Motivation to Quit Smoking” Guide
  • Ongoing utilization of Social Networking sites (ie. Facebook, Twitter, youtube & wordpress blog) and discussion listserv to expand our network base and opportunities for collaboration.
  • Created an LGBT Surveillance and Data Collection Briefing Paper on capturing LGBT data, with an emphasis on tobacco. This paper discusses which questions have been tested and why it is important to collect this data.
  • Created a State LGBT Tobacco Disparities Best Practices Briefing Paper on tested strategies states have used to address LGBT tobacco disparities. The Network strongly encourages states to view and adopt as many of these best practices as possible.
