Accomplishments

NNTPP accomplishes its mission through the work of Stakeholder organizations.
NNTPP's accomplishments include:

  • Developed tobacco cessation curricula for use with inmate populations, rural low SES populations, and 18-24 year olds in community work settings and individuals in Rescue Mission settings.
  • Assisted the State of Wisconsin with the development of a statewide network on tobacco prevention and poverty by providing linkages to local Salvation Army officials.
  • Conducted over 50 trainings for correctional facility personnel on tobacco policy implementation and cessation integration.  To date, over 300 correctional facilities nationwide are using the NNTPP cessation curriculum.
  • Conducted focus groups nationwide with low SES individuals to assess the prevalence of tobacco use and successful strategies for cessation and policy development.  These findings have been published in an NNTPP Focus Group Summary Report.
  • Published 2 case studies:  Integrating Tobacco Control into The Salvation Army's Substance Abuse Training Curriculum and Tobacco Policy, Cessation, and Education in Correctional Facilities. 
  • Conducted trainings for Salvation Army substance abuse treatment centers on policy adoption and nicotine addiction treatment.
  • Advocated for clean indoor air legislation in the State of West Virginia resulting in the adoption of policies in 4 counties in West Virginia.
  • Assisted the State of New Mexico with the development of a strategic plan to reach low SES populations with tobacco control interventions.
  • Conducted an assessment of homeless shelters and transitional living facilities in the DC metro area to assess policy and cessation programming.
  • Published numerous articles and abstracts related to tobacco use and low SES populations.
